UK Grad’s Desire to Serve Others Leads Her to Public Health

YouTube video

Jacklyn Vollmer is earning a master’s degree in public health with a concentration in epidemiology and also a graduate certificate in biostatistics. Jacklyn credits people across the UK community for her success — from Beth Hanneman at the Career Center who first told her about public health and epidemiology, and even talked to Jacklyn’s mom when she wasn’t convinced a switch from a chemistry major was a good idea — to Dr. Sarah Vos, public health lecturer who knew her from class, saw the Center for Health Equity Transformation (CHET) research assistant job posting, and told Jacklyn she should apply. As a CHET research assistant, she did tobacco-related research for “ASPiRE: Advancing Science & Policy in the Retail Environment: Big Cities Tobacco Control,” a National Institutes of Health-funded study led by Dr. Shyanika Rose. She also took part in recruiting relatives of cancer patients for a smoking cessation program at Markey Cancer Center, part of the CARE-R study.
