NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice. While some viewers might find advice provided in this talk to be helpful as a complementary approach, this speaker makes claims about nutrition and the human microbiome with too much certainty for the current state of research. Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle discusses why the gut microbiome is the most important organ you’ve probably never heard of. The gut is the second brain, and gut health affects your overall health. This means that you are what you eat, but you are also the metabolites that live in your gut and produce the substances you need for emotional balance, energy level, and disease prevention. Poor lifestyle choices cause gut imbalances, which can lead to neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune diseases, and even anxiety and depression.

Angle talks about three critical molecules and how they work in the body to affect your overall wellness. She also shares some tips about what you can do to maintain a healthy gut microbiome through diet and lifestyle choices.

Entrepreneur and biochemist Erika Ebbel Angle, PhD, has dedicated her life to studying the gut. Dr. Angle is the CEO and co-founder of Ixcela, the Internal Fitness™ company. Ixcela evaluates the gut microbiome using a blood sample, and then offers personalized recommendations to restore gut health. Angle shares her lifelong love of science in many ways, including through her nonprofit, Science from Scientists, which brings scientists into classrooms to promote STEM careers and science education. A graduate of MIT and Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Angle is also a former Miss Massachusetts who used her platform to encourage students to pursue STEM careers and scientific discovery.

Erika Ebbel Angle, Ph.D., is the CEO and Co-founder of Ixcela, a biotechnology company aimed at developing tests and interventions to improve gut microbiome efficacy and health. She is also the Executive Director and Founder of Science from Scientists, an award-winning National nonprofit focused on improving Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) attitudes and aptitudes for children aged 9-13. Outside of work, Erika enjoys scuba diving, skiing, and classical piano. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. 1. This video touches on a very important piece of a large overarching set of ideas: mental, physical, and dietary health are all interconnected parts of a single whole, and if you neglect one aspect, you effectively neglect them all.

I can say from first hand experience that there is nothing in the world more valuable than being wholly healthy; it's literally the core difference between contentment and peace versus misery and stress. You can handle life and its cruddy tendencies with startling ease if you take optimal care of yourself.

  2. I was diagnosed with H. Pilori and I changed to plant based foods. In one week my energy level went up the roof! Pre/probiotics! Veggies and fruits low in sugar. Lots of earthiness and calmed mind

  3. There is something you can do instantly.

I had serious dysbiosis due to overuse of antibiotics. I was prescribed antibiotics everytime I had flu, so you can just imagine over the years. I developed obesity and dieting and exercising was not helping. I had a permanent white costing on my tongue which tested positive for bacteria. I craved sugar constantly. Pumping my body with fibre and probiotics did not seem to make a difference until…. a light bulb went up. I developed my own protocol. I started a 3 day dewormer tablet regime. Then I literally took 1 antibiotic of a 1000mg and 8 hours later flooded my system with probiotics.
The next day I felt like a million bucks. The white coating on my tongue dissapeared overnight. My head was clear and I could finally sleep.  I'm now on a very good regime of probiotics and eating healthy foods, cutting sugar and diet sodas etc because finally I can.

From dead food addict restored to health overnight. You only need 1 antibiotic, literally. Not even doctors have figured this out yet because they all buy into the myth that a small dose causes resistant strains. Nope, 1 tablet can save you.

  4. she articulated her sentences so well which made it engaging and great information for students to grasp simple knowledge. great ted talk.

  5. What if stress is caused by real-life problems you can't get rid of, and it causes diarrhoea? Even if the doctor knows, are you doomed?

  6. 3:01 "everybody talks about the tryptophan-induced coma that happens after you have your food"

Yeah, they do talk about it, but it's not true. It's more like an urban legend.

  7. Thanks Erika for your excellent speech. It’s really informative and educational. I’d like to see more of your videos. Wishing you more success in your life. 👍❤️

  8. God bless you Dr. Ikpoko on YouTube I'm finally free from EPILEPSY after using your Herbal meds , I got cured completely

  9. Hello. I really appreciate your videos on the gut microbiome.
Unfortunately I'm on lifelong antibiotics because of Endocarditis. What advice would you have for someone like me? My infectious disease doctor tells me that I can not stop taking amoxicillin 1000 mg daily.
    Thank you

  10. There’s no money in Health, in most hospitals over the world you will find donut shops ‘ in the hospital 😅✌️

  11. I started eating a plant based diet, and I feel a high similar but also different than when smoking cannabis especially right after eating.
